Why Are Internships Valuable?

As I was going through college, I had always known that there was an option to do an internship and get a boat load of credits for it. However, I was not that keen on the idea of leaving my current job and doing an internship for another company. I didn’t understand why anyone would want to do an internship, unless you were doing it with the company you were currently working with. After meeting with an internship manager at my school, I learned that internships are valuable in many different ways. I will list a few of them below.

First, after you graduate, when applying for a job, employers love people who have done an internship (especially if it was for free, or voluntary). This shows an potential employer that you are a hard, dedicated worker trying to gain experience to better your future. Employers love this stuff!

Second, you gain loads of experience that you couldn’t have working at your dead end job. Internships allow you to start fresh with a new company, leave everything on the table, and go to work at your new job. You will learn so many new things about the industry you work in.

Last, 85% of the time, an employer will hire their interns after they graduate! If you were a hard worker and proved yourself, you will most likely be able to get a job with the same company you did an internship for. You will also start at a higher wage than those coming right out of college who didn’t do an internship with the company.

All in all, internships pay off in the long run! They are truly a great experience and will be of great value to you in the future!
